Based on the true story of screenwriter Oscar Torres’ embattled childhood, Innocent Voices is the poignant tale of Chava, an 11-year-old boy who suddenly becomes “man of the house” after his father abandons the family in the middle of a civil war in 1980s El Salvador. The government’s armed forces are already recruiting 12-year-olds, rousting them out of classes at the local middle school. If he is lucky, Chava has just one year of innocence left, one year before he, too, will be conscripted to fight the government’s battle against the peasant rebels.

Lawrence Bender has been a film producer for 15 years. His films have been honored with 19 Oscar® nominations, including two for Best Picture. Among the many movies he has produced is Good Will Hunting, which won Oscars® for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor. He also produced Anna and the King, The Mexican, and all of the movies written and directed by Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Vol. 1& 2, etc.), just to name a few. In addition to his TV and film work, Bender has successfully produced commercials and music videos with the company he formed with Tarantino, A Band Apart.

Born in El Salvador in 1972, Oscar Torres was caught in the crossfire of the country’s brutal civil war. Almost as dramatic as the story of his survival during the conflict, which is depicted in Innocent Voices, are the events of his solitary escape to the United States at age 14. Torres entered the Latin American Studies program at the University of California at Berkeley before moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. There he did commercials until he began to get theatrical and TV work, including ER, First Monday and Any Day Now. Through it all, Torres worked on the screenplay for Innocent Voices, which was initially intended as an act of personal exorcism. Torres pitched the project to director Luis Mandoki while shooting a commercial in 2002.
